Seattle's Thomas Day Oates, Jr., has produced a wonderful, wordless film that he hopes will bring peace and serenity to people trying to relax. His Cloud People relaxation video is 27 minutes of timelapse photography of clouds swirling over uninhabited mountain ranges in Canada's Waterton and America's Glacier National Parks, accompanied by Native American flute music. Says Oates jokingly, "If you fall asleep by the end of the video, I know I've succeeded."
Oates' personal battle with chronic fatigue syndrome (which he successfully overcame through his own focus on nature and by heeding "the message within") brought him to a greater appreciation of balance in his life, and ultimately led him to a new career as a documentary filmmaker. "In a world of uncertainty, distraction, and everyday noise pollution," says Oates, "stress-related illness is very common." He hopes that his video will work as a kind of "drugless therapy" by reconnecting people far from the natural world with the healing power of nature.
Oates' offering of Native American music and inspirational landscapes is a powerful remedy for stress, and manages to re-create some of the peaceful feelings that hiking or camping induces.
